Calcutta: The Howrah Rajdhani and Howrah-Ranchi Shatabdi Express have been refurbished for additional passenger comfort.

The trains with new features were unveiled at Howrah on Saturday.

Metro gives the low-down.

Improved toilets

Coaches and toilets have been fitted with Jaquar taps and health faucets.

Grab rails are there inside toilets to help people.

Auto janitors have been installed to mix perfumed disinfectants with the water while flushing toilets," an Eastern Railway official said.

Special mats have been used to keep the toilet floor dry, Ravinder Gupta, principal chief mechanical engineer, Eastern Railway, said.

"When the toilet floor is wet, it leads to shoe marks across the train and it is unhygienic.

"The new mats will help the water to percolate down but the surface will remain dry," he said.

LED lights

LEDs have been used to light the coaches of both trains. "LEDs consume less electricity and have longer shelf life," Gupta said.

The coaches have been painted azure blue to make the coaches look bright, a railway official said.

Steps

All first-class coaches of Rajdhani Express have been fitted with steps for passengers to reach the top berth.

CCTVs

CCTV cameras have been fitted in various places inside coaches. They won't be monitored real-time, though.

The data will be stored for at least six months, a railway official said. "We will run a check in case of any complaint."

How many such trains

Six rakes of the Howrah Rajdhani Express and one of the Howrah-Ranchi Shatabdi Express have been refurbished.

In November, a refurbished Sealdah Rajdhani Express rake was unveiled. Two more will be refurbished and unveiled by mid-January and two more rakes of the Howrah Rajdhani by end of January, a railway official said.
