Entally: A promoter and supplier of construction materials in central Calcutta allegedly injured himself by firing at his leg and then put the blame on his rival, leading to his arrest. Police, however, later realised the alleged bluff and arrested the promoter.
The incident happened near the railway tracks off Pottery Road in Entally on Monday afternoon.
Mohammad Shakil, 32, a resident of Convent Lane, was found lying near the railway tracks, bleeding from an injury on his left leg. Friends took him to Chittaranjan National Medical College and Hospital.
He lodged a complaint against his business rival Mohammad Gorkha, alleging that he fired at him. Acting on his complaint, Entally police station started a case of attempt to murder and under the arms act against Gorkha, a resident of Kulia Tangra First Lane.
Gorkha, 30, was arrested early on Tuesday. After he denied his involvement in the case, investigators quizzed Shakil on the sequence of events that led to his injury. The medical reports suggested that the wound could be self-inflicted.
"Mohammad Shakil broke down and admitted that he had himself shot at his leg to implicate Mohammad Gorkha in a false case," joint commissioner (crime) Praveen Tripathi said.
Although not being involved in this case, police said they would tag Gorkha in other criminal cases that are pending against him. "He has several criminal cases pending against him," he said.
