Calcutta, Aug. 25: A sub-inspector attached to Park Street police station was found hanging in his Baguiati home this morning. In suicide notes purportedly written by Kartik Chatterjee in English and Bengali, he blamed an IPS officer for his death.
Chatterjee, who was in his late forties, was found by his wife at 9.15am, hanging from the shower rod in the toilet. He was rushed to a nearby nursing home where he was declared dead on arrival.
In the “suicide notes” found in Chatterjee’s bedroom, the officer held D.P. Singh, the deputy commissioner of police (south), responsible for his death. “I was humiliated badly when I was not at fault…. I do not want to face further humiliation. Goodbye to all my friends and relatives. I hold D.P. Singh, IPS, responsible for my death,” the note reads.
Singh said he had asked Chatterjee to explain why he had not handed over case diaries to the officer in charge of Chetla police station before his transfer from there six months ago. “Chatterjee came on August 3 and I asked him to come again on August 22 with a proper explanation for the delay in handing over the case diaries,” Singh said.
Some officers, however, claimed a policeman attached to Park Street police station had “tipped off” Singh that Chatterjee had taken a bribe of Rs 40,000. “Singh called Chatterjee to his office and censured him in front of officers and constables. Chatterjee denied the allegation,” a Park Street officer said.
