Suri, April 26: The officer in charge of Sainthia police station in Birbhum was transferred last night, hours after 17 BJP supporters arrested on the charge of ransacking a Trinamul office were given bail.
The transfer of Sujoy Tunga to the newly formed district cyber crime cell prompted the BJP to allege that the move was the "direct fallout" of the BJP supporters getting the bail.
"It is clear that the OC of Sainthia police station was shunted to the cyber crime cell as 17 of our supporters who were falsely charged were granted bail. The transfer was the direct fallout of it. Had bail been denied, the OC would not have been transferred," district BJP president Ramkrishna Roy said.
District police chief Sudheer Kumar described the transfer as "routine".
The 17 arrested BJP supporters had been slapped with serious charges like attempt to murder and provisions under the Arms Act and Explosive Substances Act.
Sources said the report submitted by the police to the court had a few loopholes.
An officer pointed out the report mentioned that the police had visited the ransacked Trinamul office twice, six hours apart. It was in the second visit that a pistol and some splinters were recoovered.
District Trinamul chief Anubrata Mondal said: "It was not expected that the accused would get bail. The police did their work. But we will move the district judge's court against the bail."
