Students of Julien Day Schools celebrate Founder’s Day at St Paul’s Cathedral on April 7 |
Good conduct and talent were rewarded at an annual award ceremony conducted by the Calcutta, Ganganagar, Kalyani and Howrah branches of Julien Day School at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre in Salt Lake on April 8.
The event was anchored by Jayanta Kumar Sen, the director of education and development of the Julien Educational Trust and also the principal of the school’s Ganganagar branch, and Julian Broughton, the chairman of the Trust.
The evening started with the Howrah branch singing the school song, followed by the award ceremony.
The George Broughton Memorial Award — a new entrant — for excellence in sports and athletics was presented to the students by hockey player Leslie Claudius, an alumnus. The Kalyani branch bagged prizes in athletics, football and hockey, while the Calcutta (Elgin Road) branch won awards for basketball and cricket.
The George Broughton Award for the most promising sportsperson went to Suvajit Das from Julien Day School, Calcutta.
The Julien Day Educational Trust Awards were presented to the best all-rounders and top performers in the Class X and XII board exams. A new prize for exemplary attendance — 100 per cent from KG to Class X — was won by Arani Das and Ekabali Ghosh of Calcutta.
Twenty three staff members — both teaching and non-teaching — were also given awards for regular attendance. Finally, the Calcutta branch clinched the George Broughton Challenge Shield for All-Round Championship, with Kalyani coming a close second.
In between the presentation of awards, the audience was treated to a cultural programme.
Students of Calcutta staged a fusion dance to a medley of songs. Around 45 Ganganagar students danced to Do Re Me from the Hollywood classic The Sound of Music while Kalyani kids grooved to Waka Waka. The choir also sang a few songs, including one composed by student Swarna Chakraborty of the Howrah branch. Among the alumni present were cricketer Saradindu Mukherjee and singer Surajit Chatterjee.
On April 7, the schools celebrated their Founder’s Day at St Paul’s Cathedral.
