April 13: Commuters went on the rampage at Nungi station of South 24-Parganas today, ransacking the station master's room, damaging a police vehicle and assaulting the driver and guard of a local train to protest late running of trains during rush hours.

Agitators blocked the tracks for over three hours from 8am, disrupting train services on the Sealdah-Budge Budge section.

"Hundreds of commuters were waiting for a Sealdah-bound train," said a GRP officer. "As the train reached the platform 20 minutes late, some passengers went to the stationmaster's room and others squatted on the tracks."

The commuters alleged the stationmaster told them to ask the driver about the delay. The passengers then damaged furniture and other equipment in the station master's room.

Some protesters assaulted the driver and the guard of the train, which got stranded because of the blockade.

A GRP team from Sealdah rushed to the spot. Cops from Budge Budge and Maheshtala reached the station, too. The protesters hurled stones at them and overturned one of the police vehicles. The police lathicharged the protesters.

Train services resumed around noon.
