Ramnagar: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said her government would build nine flyovers across north and south Calcutta over the next three to four years to reduce traffic congestion.

"In the last six years, Calcutta has witnessed a change. Roads have become wider, several beautification projects are being taken up, including greenery, and even the drainage system is being developed," she said. "In another three to four years, we will build more flyovers. Vehicular speed will then go up and people can return home early."
She said the money to build these flyovers would come from a Rs 12,000-crore corpus earmarked for development of infrastructure.
Mamata said the government also intended to extend the flyover coming up between Batanagar and Jinjira Bazar first to Joka and then to Garia, which would make it the longest flyover in the country.
"Construction of the Batanagar-Jinjira Bazar flyover is almost complete. It will take another seven to eight months. If we can extend this flyover first to Joka and then to Garia, it will cover nearly 30km. That will make it the longest flyover in the country," Mamata said while inaugurating the Garden Reach flyover at Ramnagar. "It might take us four to five years (to build the proposed flyovers). The union government has stopped funding projects. We will execute these infrastructure projects with 100 per cent funds from the state."
