Englishbazar BJP MLA Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury's SUV met with an accident on Thursday late evening, the second such incident involving her vehicle in the past three weeks.

In both the incidents, the MLA's SUV was hit by vehicles which are owned by either Trinamul leaders or their relatives.

The MLA escaped unhurt on both the occasions.

Sreerupa said she had been returning from Manikchak to Malda along the state highway. Around 9.45pm, another SUV coming from the opposite direction hit her vehicle head-on in the Uttar Ramchandrapur area under the jurisdiction of Englishbazar police station.

“We came to know that the vehicle belongs to a Trinamul leader. He was in the SUV,” said the MLA.

Later, she filed a written complaint at Englishbazar police station.

Aniket Roy, the youth Trinamul chairman of Amrity gram panchayat in Englishbazar block, said: “The MLA’s SUV lost control and rammed into my vehicle. When I got off, the MLA’s security personnel and some others misbehaved with me. I have also lodged a complaint with police.”

The police said an investigation was underway.

On October 27, while Sreerupa was returning to Malda from Manikchak along the same route, her vehicle was hit by a two-wheeler in the Milky area. It was later learnt that the nephew of a local Trinamul leader was riding the bike.

District BJP leaders said the accidents were “unusual”.

“Coincidentally, the vehicles which hit our MLA's SUV belong to Trinamul leaders or their relatives. Police should enquire into such incidents impartially and ensure adequate protection of the MLA,” said Partha Sarathi Ghosh, the president of the BJP's Malda South organisational district.

Abdur Rahim Boxi, the Trinamul president of Malda, said: “Accidents cannot be predicted. We wish the BJP MLA a long and healthy life. But it seems BJP leaders are trying to politicise the accidents. We have faith in a police enquiry that will reveal the truth.”

Trader murdered

Cooch Behar: A 35-year-old trader dealing in cottage cheese in Cooch Behar was murdered near his native village on Friday early morning.

Police sources said the body of Subrata Ghosh, a resident of Nazirhat which is about 45 kilometers from here, was recovered from a vacant plot near Balarampur-Nazirhat Road under Tufanganj police station.

“There were multiple stab marks in his body. We suspect that he was murdered. His motorbike was also found at the spot,” said Dyutiman Bhattacharya, SP, Cooch Behar.

The slain trader’s relatives and residents of Kanyamoti village (where the deceased used to stay) of Balarampur panchayat, raised the road blockade at around 10am in protest.

They burned tyres and kept the road blocked for nearly two hours.
