Calcutta: Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday broke her silence on the controversy over the ownership of the Biswa Bangla brand and logo, claiming that there was no wrongdoing involved.
"The Biswa Bangla logo was created by me in 2013.... It is my dream, I gave it to the state government free of cost because dreams are never sold. The state government can use it for as long as it desires. If it lets go of it, it will come back to me," she told the Assembly.
"Did I do anything wrong? Those trying to fish in muddied waters out of political vendetta have insulted the brand, the state and its people."
Mamata was referring to allegations by former Trinamul leader Mukul Roy that her nephew Abhishek Banerjee owned the rights of the Biswa Bangla brand and logo, the party's electoral symbol and mouthpiece Jago Bangla, and the Ma-Mati-Manush slogan.
Abhishek and Roy have locked horns in a legal battle, while the Opposition has been going to town against the alleged dubiousness of the ownership.
Sources said Mamata's statement - made on the floor of the House and thus placed on record - was "not incorrect" and Roy had merely seized the opportunity presented by a case of "oversight".
"We own the brand for using it in almost all purposes, but never thought of some insignificant areas where an application from Abhishek was pending claiming the rights to the logo," a senior state government official said.
"As soon we came to know about it, we filed an objection. We should have noticed it earlier to avoid the controversy. It was our mistake," he added.
Roy said he would issue a statement on Thursday.
Dhaka invite
Mamata on Wednesday told the Assembly that she had been invited as the keynote speaker at an international literary festival in Dhaka in January next year. Later in the day, she told journalists that she would not be able to go because the event coincided with the Gangasagar Mela.
