The Left Front on Friday organised a march to the CGO Complex, which houses the offices of the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate, in Salt Lake near here to press the central agencies to expedite action against “corrupt” leaders and ministers of the Trinamul Congress.

The Left leaders accused the CBI and the ED of slowing down probes at the BJP’s behest.“The corrupt shall go to prison. Those from Trinamul currently under arrest, we don’t know how long it would take for them to be released. Capturing the thieves and filling the prisons with them alone will not do. The money looted has to be returned,” said CPM politburo member Surjya Kanta Mishra, adding that it was difficult to tell who was part of Trinamul and who was in the BJP given their alleged similarities.

“Everybody must come together in this fight against both,” he said.

“The chief minister now issues certificates of praise for the RSS, which had hailed her as goddess Durga once.”

CPM state secretary Mohammad Salim jeered at Mamata for directing her party to accord a “hero’s welcome” to Trinamul’s Birbhum strongman Anubrata Mondal, arrested by the CBI in connection with cattle smuggling, when he got out of prison.

“They come like thieves, go like thieves, yet the chief minister orders felicitation for them,” said Salim at the protest meeting, which Left supporters staged by defying a police diktat.

Left Front chairman Biman Bose accused the ruling dispensation in Bengal of trying to throttle democracy.

“We must vow against democracy being murdered here,” said Bose. A CPM insider has said the Front’s aggression against alleged corruption in the Trinamul regime has greater credibility than that of the BJP and the current situation has given the Left an advantage over the saffron camp in the Opposition space in Bengal.

“Other than the Left, who has been hitting the streets for people’s issues, over the past decade? Trinamul and the BJP fear none other than the Left. They will know now what stuff we are made of,” said CPM central committee member Sujan Chakraborty.
