Jan. 18: Teachers of a girls' school in Bankrahat, South 24-Parganas, where a Scorpio killed a boy and his mother on Monday have alleged that stunt bikers harass them as well as students.

The Scorpio had left five students, aged between six and 12, and a man with severe injuries.

Today, police arrested Sheikh Kalu, the Scorpio driver, but refused to divulge details even as people of the area blocked Bankrahat-Thakurpukur Road at Rashapunja demanding compensation for the dead and injured.

While the police haven't said if the accident was the result of stunt driving, the stretch of Bankrahat Road near Gyanodamoyi Balika Vidyalaya remains prone to accidents because of stunt bikers.

The school had written a letter to Bishnupur police station about stunt bikers passing lewd comments at students and teachers, following which two civic cops were posted outside the school, a teacher said today.

"We have seen youths waiting outside the school gate pass lewd comments at students and teachers. This has been going on for almost two years," Baby Das, the teacher-in-charge of Gyanodamoyi Balika Vidyalaya, said.

"Things improved with the posting of the civic cops but they left after some months to manage the long queues outside banks following the demonetisation announcement."

People of the area and shopkeepers, too, had the same allegation: youths gather outside the school, perform stunts on their bikes and pass lewd comments at students and teachers.

The youths leave the place when people protest, Sanjay Sarkar, who runs a shop close to the school, said. "But they come back after a few days."

Around noon today, a group of people set an outpost of Bishnupur police station, barely 500m from the accident spot, on fire.

Apart from Kalu, the police arrested three people on charges of destroying government property and assaulting cops. After the accident on Monday, people of the area had clashed with cops. Seven policemen, including the inspector-in-charge of Bishnupur police station, had been injured.
