General category students with rank up to 7,000 in state JEE will be eligible for seeking admission to Jadavpur University’s engineering courses through decentralised counselling. The university has 143 seats empty.

For the architecture course, rank-holders till 11,000 would be allowed to participate in counselling.

The university’s admission committee met on Monday to finalise modalities of the counselling and decided that those ranked below 7,000 would not be able to seek admission, said a member of the panel. “We don’t want to dilute our academic standard. We have set a bar on calling JEE rankers for all 16 engineering streams other than architecture,” said a university official.

The higher education department had last Wednesday consented to the university’s proposal to hold decentralised counselling to fill 143 out of a total 1,017 BE seats. Of the 143 seats, 114 are in the general category while the rest are reserved for SC, ST and OBC students. This year, the JEE board has awarded ranks to all candidates (one-lakh) who wrote the test in April.

Students ranked up to 5,000 were admitted during the three-phase centralised counselling conducted by the JEE board. “Only 2,000 more candidates would be allowed to take part in the counselling,” said the panel member.

The schedule and details of the decentralised counselling have been uploaded on the JU website. Advertisements will be published in newspapers, detailing the vacancies in each stream. “If the seats are filled up in the first phase counselling would be stopped,” said JU registrar Pradip Ghosh.
