Move over Shah Rukh Khan vs Salman Khan, it’s Jeet vs Dev in Bengal. Jeet’s Boss (Rs 72.5 lakh) has beaten Dev’s Khoka 420 (Rs 70 lakh) record for highest opening-day collections by a Bengali film.

If Khoka 420 (2013) produced by Eskay Movies broke Challenge’s (2009) first-day record (Rs 68 lakh), Boss produced by Reliance Entertainment in association with Grassroot Entertainment toppled Khoka 420 on Id Friday.

So, if in Bollywood the first-day crown has gone from Salman to Shah Rukh, in Tollywood Jeet’s gain is Dev’s loss. Boss, starring Jeet and Subhashree, released on August 9 at 200 cinemas across Bengal.

“We had announced our release date six months in advance based on our production schedule. Since Id is a festive period and the box office expands during the time, we were keen to capitalise on it. The strategy has paid off,” said Mahesh Ramanathan, the chief operating officer of Reliance Entertainment.

Now the big question is whether Boss can emerge as the highest Tollywood grosser of all time. For that, it will have to beat the mark set by Jeet’s Awara (2012), directed by Ravi Kinnagi and produced by Shree Venkatesh Films.

“Boss has broken the opening-day record but Awara continues to be the highest-grossing Bengali film ever. Awara had maintained steady footfall for days after its release and Boss will have to try and match that,” said Krishna Daga, the vice-president of the Eastern India Motion Picture Association.
