Calcutta, June 8: The results of the joint entrance examinations (JEE) 2004 for admission to engineering and medical colleges in the state were announced today.
Students from one of the country’s most-populous schools, South Point, dominated the merit lists for both streams. As many as eight out of 20 students figuring on the engineering and medical merit lists belonged to the school.
South Pointers Subhro Majumdar and Samrat Mondal stood first in the entrance tests for engineering and technology and medical and dental colleges. The second position on the medical merit list, too, went to the same school. In engineering, the student placed second was from Modern High, also in south Calcutta.
Calcutta schools had been conceding ground to their counterparts from the districts in Madhyamik and Higher Secondary examinations over the past few years.
In all, 48,649 students had appeared in JEE 2004, said A.K. Das, member secretary, West Bengal Board of Examination for Admission to Engineering and Medical and Technological Colleges. There are 12,277 seats in 50-odd engineering institutions across the state and approximately 900 seats in the medical and dental courses.
The other city institutions on the two merit lists were Jodhpur Park Boys’ School and St Joseph College. Howrah Zilla School, Ramakrishna Mission, Narendrapur, Arambag High School and Uttarpara Government High School were some of the others.
