Four persons were killed in two separate road accidents in Murshidabad district on Wednesday night.

In the first incident, three persons riding a two-wheeler were mowed down by a speeding truck at Samugram of Sagardighi about 10.30pm on Wednesday.

The deceased trio were a mother, her son and another family member, local sources said. Police said the trio had gone to Sagardighi police station for personal work.

The police and the local sources said the two-wheeler had a head-on collision with the speeding truck, following which Som Mondal, 28, Bithika Mondal, 43, and Sanchita Mondal, 36, were thrown to the ground.

The truck then ran over the three and sped away. The police later seized the killer truck, but the driver managed to escape.

The two-wheeler was riding on the Sagardighi-Jangipur road from Monigram to Mirzapur.

In the other incident, one person was killed and 10 others injured when a Siliguri-bound private bus hit a Calcutta-bound truck head-on after entering the wrong lane, ignoring the divider on NH12 near Farakka.

Police said bus driver Samar Choudhury, 45, a resident of Malda, had died on the spot. The police extracted his body from the mangled remains of the bus and sent it for post-mortem. The injured passengers of the bus were admitted to Farakka block hospital, the police said.

Passengers on the bus claimed that their vehicle had entered the Calcutta-bound lane of NH12 in a bid to overtake some cargo trucks when the crash had occurred.

“The accident occurred apparently because of the fault of the bus driver,” a police officer said. The police seized the truck, but the driver was untraceable.
