IIEST ragging probe
• HOWRAH: Indian Institute of Engineering Science & Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, has formed a four-member committee to probe a ragging complaint a student lodged with the UGC's anti-ragging helpline. The anonymous complaint was forwarded to the institute by the UGC on Tuesday, following which director Ajoy Ray formed a probe committee. Another complaint of ragging was lodged with the UGC helpline about a fortnight ago. But the institute did not find any merit in that complaint upon completion of probe.
Death in PS
METIABRUZ: Police have started a probe into the alleged suicide of Akibul Islam, who was found hanging from the ceiling fan in a first-floor room of Metiabruz police station on Tuesday. He had been taken to the police station for questioning in connection with a string of jewellery thefts in the area. He allegedly hanged himself while the investigating officer in the case left him alone in the room for some time.
Lock-up suicide
• NEW BARRACKPORE: A 29-year-old man who was caught and handed over to police after he had allegedly entered a house at Talbanda, in New Barrackpore police station area, to steal committed suicide inside the police station's lock-up on Tuesday evening, police said. Sudarshan Sarkar, the youth who lived in the area, was found hanging with a blanket tied around his neck. An inquiry has been initiated into his death.
Clash at petrol pump
New town: Several drivers clashed with the attendants of a petrol pump behind the New Town police station, alleging that they had put kerosene instead of diesel in the fuel tanks of their vehicles. The customers also clashed with the police when they reached the spot after receiving a distress call from the pump management. The men soon dispersed. One of them drove his car over the foot of a police constable while trying to flee.
Road death
Bongaon: A 25-year-old woman died in Gaighata, North 24-Parganas, on Tuesday night when her shawl got entangled in one of th wheels of a mechanised van in which she was travelling. Malati Das died on the spot as she was strangulated and fell on the road. She was dragged for a few metres before the van came to a halt.
Accident
Shakespeare Sarani: A car hit another at the crossing of Shakespeare Sarani and Park Street crossing on Tuesday evening. Nandita Sett, 59, who was at the wheel one of the cars, lodged a complaint with Shakespeare Sarani police station later in the evening. According to her, a man who was inside her car sustained injuries in the accident. The errant vehicle fled the spot after the accident, police said.
iPhone theft
Topsia: An iPhone was stolen from a car near Viswakarma building on the Park Circus connector of EM Bypass late on Tuesday. Sudhir Chattapan, the owner of the phone, lodged a complaint with Topsia police station on Wednesday.
Gold haul at airport
• DUM DUM: Customs officers on Wednesday found 10kg gold worth Rs 3 crore in two UPS devices seized at Calcutta airport during a probe to find out how imported goods were being taken out of the airport without paying duty. Initially, the UPS devices had come out clean after a scan and were kept in the airport cargo area, said an official. On Wednesday, acting on a fresh tip-off, the customs officers opened several parts of the two devices and found 10 gold biscuits wrapped in anti-scanning papers in the battery chamber.
Rape complaint
• SALT LAKE: A woman on Wednesday lodged a rape complaint against a man she had met through a social networking site.The woman was raped in October at a guest house where she had gone to meet the man and discuss a possible business venture with him, according to the complaint lodged with the Electronics Complex police station in Sector V. The complainant alleged that she had been offered a drink laced with sedatives. The man allegedly raped her after she lost consciousness.
CMC plans day care centre
• COSSIPORE: The Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) will build a day-care centre for children in Kashiswar Chatterjee Lane at Cossipore. Avijit Mukherjee, mayoral council (education), said on Wednesday that the centre will open at 8am and close at 4pm. Working parents can drop their kids at the centre in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon.
Appointment
JADAVPUR: Sivaji Bandyopadhyay, the dean of engineering faculty at Jadavpur University, has been appointed director of National Institute Of Technology, Silchar. The ministry of human resource development has appointed him to the post for five years. Bandyopadhyay will join the institute on December 2.
Threat arrest
• GIRISH PARK: A truck driver was arrested on Monday for threatening an app-cab driver who had protested after the truck hit the taxi. Police said Arjun Singh Chowdhury, the truck driver, hit the app cab at the Vivekananda Road-CR Avenue crossing. When the cab driver, Sujit Singh, protested, the truck driver threatened him with dire consequences. Arjun was arrested after Sujit lodged a complaint with Girish Park police station.
Ajmer Express
• SEALDAH: The Sealdah-Ajmer Express, scheduled to leave Sealdah at 10.55pm on Wednesday, will leave at 9.05am on Thursday because of a delay in the arrival of the corresponding Down train, said an Eastern Railway official.
