Jan 18: Sakshi, 11, saw a tram run over her mother Jyoti Singh on Rashbehari Avenue yesterday as she herself got dragged a few metres.
Jyoti died of injuries within hours of the accident at Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan, while Sakshi was discharged after first aid.
Her legs are wounded and she still cannot stand without a support.
Today she spoke to Metro , recounting the horror of seeing her mother get crushed under the wheels of a tram.
Mummy didn't let go my hand when the tram was dragging her.
She was screaming and I could see her leg caught under the wheels. I, too, was screaming. I was scared both of us would die right there because the tram kept moving even though people all around were shouting for it to stop.
I felt my head bang against something... it was probably a a lamp post... around the same time, I felt mummy's grip loosen and my hand slipped out of hers.
My entire body was aching. The tram had stopped and I could see mummy lying on the tracks behind the tram. Only later did I realise that she had been run over.
I was bleeding from the legs and I couldn't find my shoes. I tried to get up but I could not. Some people helped me stand but no one was touching mummy.
I went up to her... she lay bloodied and crying in pain. Bimla aunty (her mother's friend), who was with us, hugged me. I could see my brother Nishant and aunty's son Vinod across the road.
They had already crossed the road while aunty, mummy and I were stuck in the middle when the accident occurred.
After some time, an ambulance came. Some policemen put my mother on a stretcher and put her inside the vehicle. I got into the driver's cabin with Bimla aunty and we were taken to a hospital.
Papa reached the hospital shortly.
Everything happened so quickly. We were coming from Manoharpukur Road after getting enrolled in a tuition class.
Nishant and Vinod had crossed the road in one go. Mummy, Bimla aunty and I waited to let a tram from Gariahat pass before crossing the road.
But as the tram was passing in front of us, another came from behind. Mummy held my hand tightly as there was little space between the trams.
Suddenly she fell when our school bags, which were with her, got caught in the other tram. I, too, fell with her.
Her cries are still ringing in my ears.
