Siliguri, Oct. 31: History will be re-enacted on Saturday when a specially decorated, chartered DHR toy train leaves Kurseong railway station for the Goethals Memorial School siding to commemorate 100 years of the same journey made by the then Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Andrew Fraser.
Fraser and his wife had a special mission — to inaugurate the school.
The journey’s replica is a highlight of the centenary celebrations to be held at the school from tomorrow till November 7.
This time, a lieutenant general of the Indian Army will do the honours. General Officer Commanding, 33 Corps, Lt Gen. Dipak Raj, and his entourage will take the 17-minute ride to the school.
For 75 years since April 29, 1907, students took the toy train to and from the school till the special train was stopped.
Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who was to have been the chief guest, will not be able to make it because he is indisposed, a centenary celebration committee member said.
“We are expecting over 400 former students to turn up, including about 50 from Australia, Canada, UK and the US,” said Ranjan Guha Majumdar, the member.
Several events have been lined up for the celebrations, including honouring three Olympic gold medalists who are former students of the school. A helicopter will shower petals and confetti on the gathering on November 3, the day of the main function.
