Kantabari (South Dinajpur), Oct. 30: Barely two months ago, Uday Roy (18) died in a road accident while returning to his home in Kusmandi from his college in Kaliaganj.

Sushil Chandra Roy, his father, has decided to hand over a cheque of Rs 3.5 lakh to the head teacher of Kantabari-Adibari High School — Uday’s school — the money he had received as insurance claim for his son. Today, he handed over the application for the grant to head teacher Animesh Lahiri and managing committee secretary Mantu Roy.

Uday died on September 8 leaving Roy and his wife Jyotsna, childless. The 57-year-old man, a clerk at the same school, decided that he would have nothing to do with the insurance claim and gave it away to the institution. Rs 2 lakh came from an LIC policy and the rest from the accident insurance claim.

Lahiri said: “We have decided to do two things with this grant. We will build a classroom in Uday’s name and fund a scholarship of Rs 1.5 lakh for meritorious but needy students.”

Roy and his wife were moved by the school’s decision.

“Though my son was not a brilliant student, he was of a quiet and sociable disposition. He studied arts at Kaliaganj College in North Dinajpur,” Roy said.
