A suspected smuggler, who is resident of Bihar, was arrested with four firearms on Monday from a train while he was en route to Malda.

Faizul Mohammad, who hails from Munger district of Bihar, was intercepted by a team of the Special Task Force (STF) of Bengal police at Khaltipur station in Malda. He had boarded the Katihar-Howrah Express and was on way to Kaliachak in Malda.

“Faizul was carrying four small firearms. We suspect he is a member of an interstate arms smuggling racket. During preliminary investigation, it has been learnt that he was on way to Kaliachak to deliver the firearms to a person. Searches are on to nab him,” said a police officer.

Later, a case was registered with the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Malda Town station, sources said.

Cobra rescued

A 13-feet-long king cobra was rescued from the Baradighi tea estate located in Matialli block of Jalpaiguri district on Tuesday afternoon.

Sources said some workers spotted the snake in a stream that flows through the plantations.

Later, the snake was trapped and handed over to foresters, who took it to the nature interpretation centre in Lataguri.

“We have kept the snake under observation. It will be released in the wild after medical treatment,” said a forester.
