Father John D'Campo, a former teacher in the senior section of St. Xavier's Collegiate School, passed away on Friday morning after a cardio-respiratory arrest. He was 84.
Melvin D'Souza, an alumnus of St. Xavier's school and currently a senior co-ordinator at the school, said as a student he found it amazing how Father D'Campo could teach several subjects with ease.
"He used to teach us physics and religious instruction. But he would teach any subject after school. He was proficient in both Bengali and Hindi," said D'Souza, who was taught by Father D'Campo between 1985 and 1987.
Father D'Campo studied at St. Xavier's school from 1939 to 1947 before going on to study marine engineering.
He joined the Jesuit Order in 1953, at the age of 23.
After he was ordained nine years later, Father D'Campo started taking up assignments for the Jesuit Order, one of which was to teach at St. Xavier's.
He had been staying at the Fathers' Residence on Park Street for many years.
His funeral service will be held at the school chapel at 9.30am on Saturday.
