Drug haul at airport

DUM DUM: The Narcotics Control Bureau arrested two men on Thursday for allegedly trying to smuggle more than 8kg marijuana through a check-in counter at the airport. Sheikh Raju, a resident of Tamluk, and Sarfaraz Alam from the Andamans were about to board a flight to Port Blair when they were arrested. The duo had concealed the marijuana in plastic packets kept in their handbags. The estimated value of the substance is around Rs 1 lakh.

Taxi on fire

PHOOLBAGAN : An air- conditioned taxi caught fire on EM Bypass, between Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals and Mani Square, around 6.30pm on Thursday. A fire tender doused the flames within 15 minutes. No one was injured or trapped in the taxi, said police. The taxi was later impounded by officers of the Phoolbagan police station.

Junior doc jumps off fifth floor

PARK CIRCUS: A second-year postgraduate student of surgery allegedly tried to commit suicide by jumping off the fifth floor of the emergency building at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital around 9pm on Thursday. The student was rushed to the emergency ward and then shifted to the intensive care unit where he was put on ventilation. “His (the patient) condition is extremely critical,” said Pit Baran Chakraborty, the medical superintendent and vice-principal of the hospital.

Poorva Express

HOWRAH: The Delhi-bound Poorva Express will leave Howrah station at 11.05am instead of 8.05am on Friday because the Howrah-bound Down train was running behind schedule, said an Eastern Railway official. 

Accident injury

SALT LAKE: A car hit a cycle rickshaw from behind near the Sen Mahasay bus stop in Salt Lake on Thursday evening. The three-wheeler was empty when the car hit it. The rickshaw puller sustained minor injuries.

Rosogolla treat

SALT LAKE: Bihannagar mayor Sabyasachi Dutta, and Trinamul leader Madan Mitra distributed more than 3,500 packets of rosogollas to the participants and officials of the 63rd National School Game Gymnastics Championship at SAI complex on Thursday. Participants from all 26 states tasted the sweet that received the Geographical Indication tag from the Indian Patent Office on November 14.

Body found

HARIDEVPUR: A man was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his home in Haridevpur on Thursday morning. Rakesh Singh, 33, a resident of Thakurpukur Housing Society, was declared dead at MR Bangur Hospital. 

Woman ‘sold’ for Rs 70,000

HOWRAH: The Howrah GRP has started a probe based on a complaint lodged by a homemaker who was allegedly trafficked to Uttar Pradesh and sold to a man for Rs 70,000. The woman managed to escape from her abductor and returned to the city a few weeks ago. According to the complaint filed by the woman on Tuesday, a man named Tapas, identified as her friend, had requested her to accompany him to his sister’s house in Uttar Pradesh where she was sold to a man named Girish Yadav.

Theft arrest

SEALDAH: A man was arrested from Sealdah station on Thursday while he was fleeing after stealing a passenger’s bag. He was spotted jumping out of a running train. On being questioned he admitted to have stolen the bag, said an officer of Railway Protection Force’s Crime Intelligence Branch (CIB). The man, identified as Hamid Mir, 23, is a resident of the Park Circus area.

Man found dead

JODHPUR GARDENS: A 65-year-old retired employee of the Calcutta University library was found dead at his Jodhpur Gardens house around 10am on Thursday. Police said a neighbour saw Samir Chowdhury lying on his bed through an open window. He alerted other neighbours and officers of Lake police station. He had been suffering from heart ailment, police said.

Biker injured

PARNASREE: A private car hit a motorcyclist in front of the National Film Development Corporation on Upen Banerjee Road on Wednesday night. Police said Somnath Sardar, 33, a resident of Motilal Gupta Road in Haridevpur, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. He was taken to Vidyasagar Hospital with multiple injuries. The driver of the car has been arrested.
