A steel plate welded to the spot where a bulge had formed. Over a half a dozen big bulges have been discovered at the base of the dry compartment. The bulges were noticed after a two-feet layer of sediment was removed from the bottom of the tank. Engineers from Jadavpur University, the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) and Bridge and Roof Company Limited, a central government enterprise, have no definite explanation for the phenomenon. “We are not sure what exactly caused the bulges,” said the director general of CMC (water supply), Bibhas Kumar Maity.
One of the columns that hold the tank aloft being repaired. Each column is 110ft high. The columns have corroded in some places.
An engineer removes a section of the 12mm metal floor where one of the bulges had formed. A steel plate will be welded on the spot. The Steel Authority of India is supplying the steel plates.
