Calcutta, July 30: The Mamata Banerjee government has started work on making Calcutta a full-fledged district under the supervision of a district magistrate and collector.

Chief secretary Samar Ghosh today held a meeting on this with home secretary G.D. Gautama, personnel and administrative reforms secretary Indevar Pandey, land reforms commissioner R.D. Meena and backward classes welfare secretary S.K. Khare.

“Work has begun on turning Calcutta into a full-fledged district under a district magistrate and collector. The Calcutta district will comprise the 141 wards of the CMC,” said Ghosh.

He said people of Calcutta have to go to the South 24-Parganas district magistrate’s office at Alipore for OBC certificates and revenue related matters. “Turning the city into a full-fledged district will help in such administrative matters,” Ghosh added.
