Students injured

Five students were injured when the rickshaw-van on which they were returning home from school hit a Maruti van near Chinar Park on New Town's Main Arterial Road on Thursday afternoon. Tamanna Amin, Saheli Hella, Rehan Ali, Namero Jawed and Jhanabi Thakur - aged between three and five - were taken to a local nursing home, from where they were discharged after first aid.

As soon as the van entered the arterial road from a bylane, the car came in front of it. "The van-puller pressed the brakes but the car dashed its rear part," said a traffic cop who was stationed 100m from the spot. "The van and the car have been seized, while the driver and the van-puller have been detained," said Santosh Pandey, deputy commissioner, Bidhannagar commissionerate. The duo were released in the evening.

Fatal fall

A 22-year-old man died after falling from the roof of a four-storeyed building in Howrah's Belur on Thursday evening. Police said Jala Kahar was taken to TL Jaiswal Hospital, where he was declared dead. It was not clear whether he fell accidentally or committed suicide.

Accident

Three persons were injured after the minibus they were travelling in overturned on Strand Road near Kingsway on Thursday morning. The injured were taken to SSKM Hospital.
