Ex-judge harass
Azgar Ali Gazi, 36, was arrested on Sunday night for allegedly harassing Ashim Kumar Roy, a retired judge of Calcutta High Court, and a police constable posted in front of his house in New Town's Action Area II on Sunday. Another man, Ansar Ali Mollah, was arrested on Sunday on the the same charge. Police said Gazi and Mollah were syndicate operatives in New Town.
Trouble broke out when the duo had parked a motorcycle in front of Justice Roy's three-storeyed house and were supervising unloading of bricks and sand on Sunday afternoon. The police said the constable asked the duo to remove the trucks containing sand and bricks from in front of the entrance of the house. They allegedly abused the constable and later misbehaved with Justice Roy when he intervened. Justice Roy then called up Bidhannagar police commissioner Gyanwant Singh. When a police team reached the spot Gazi had fled. Mollah was arrested and the bike seized.
Shop fire
A fire broke out in a stationery shop on the first floor of Vardaan Market on Camac Street on Sunday. Two tenders took more than half an hour to douse the flames. No one was injured. The extent of damage and the cause of fire are yet to be ascertained.
Found dead
A 27-year-old man was found hanging in his room in Howrah's Liluah on Monday morning. Police said Dharmendra Prasad, a resident of the Liluah Railway Colony, was taken to a local hospital where he was declared dead. A case of unnatural death has been started.
Injured
A 23-year-old woman was injured after being knocked down by a minibus on Diamond Harbour Road, near Thakurpukur Bazar, on Monday morning. Police said Rita Paul, a resident of Madhyamgram, was crossing the road when she was hit by the minibus.
