Calcutta, July 18: Suchismita Das was in Calcutta a few months ago, holidaying with her parents. She was back in the city this morning to cremate them.
Suchismita wiped her tears with the end of her dupatta after laying wreathes on the bodies. A relative put a consoling arm around her. The tears kept flowing.
A man she had known for years is suspected to be her parents' killer.
At one point, Suchismita appeared to want to talk to someone but couldn't. "She is too shocked to speak. She couldn't believe that someone whom her parents had known for so many years could kill them," a relative said.
Suchismita, 42, the only child of the murdered Paikpara couple, arrived from Washington this morning with her husband Tushar Baran Deb and their daughter. They are US citizens, a family member said.
From the airport, Suchismita went to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital morgue and from there to Kashi Mitra Ghat in Baranagar for the cremation. As the crematorium was too crowded, the family went to Ratan Babu's Ghat.
In Washington, Suchismita is engaged with an organisation that works for US military veterans.
An officer said the police wanted to speak to Suchismita since she had known the accused, Sanjay Sen, and his wife Purnima for many years.
