Calcutta police on Thursday posted a police picket outside the house of a former CPM councillor in Kasba who had lodged a complaint against some Trinamul activists for painting poll graffiti on the wall of her house without her consent.
When Metro visited the place on Thursday evening, there were four policemen posted outside former councillor Annapurna Das’s house.
Four men known to be CPM supporters have been arrested for an alleged scuffle with Trinamul activists in the area on Wednesday afternoon.
The arrests, sources said, were made on the basis of a complaint lodged by the Trinamul activists. No one, however, has been arrested based on a counter-complaint by CPM supporters.
Trouble started on Monday when Trinamul supporters allegedly started painting poll graffiti on the boundary wall of the house owned by the family of Das.
Das, 56, who was the councillor of ward 91 from 1995 to 2000, said she asked the Trinamul activists why they were painting the graffiti without her consent.
Das — who lives with her 70-year-old brother, 64-year-old sister and 66-year-old brother-in-law — alleged that the Trinamul supporters threatened her with dire consequences if she did not allow them to draw the graffiti.
Annapurna lodged a complaint and the police started a case of criminal intimidation against the Trinamul men.
On Wednesday, the former councillor’s family allowed graffiti on the wall of their house in favour of the CPM’s candidate from South Calcutta, Nandini Mukherjee. “Our party supporters started painting graffiti at 4pm. Around 5.30pm, some 30 Trinamul men came and started slapping and beating up the men. When I went out and protested, they left,” Das said.
The CPM and Trinamul supporters lodged complaints against each other.
CPM supporters Bijoy Banik, Gopal Das, Sheikh Sukuramin and Kamal Das have been arrested based on Trinamul’s complaint.
Sushanta Ghosh, Trinamul councillor from the adjacent ward 107, denied the CPM’s allegations. “CPM supporters blackened our graffiti and have occupied all our walls. They are not allowing us to write any graffiti,” he said.
