Cops nab‘drug addict’ for murdering youth in Cooch Behar

We need to grill him to gather more information and to fine the motive behind the murder: officer

An alleged drug addict was arrested on Thursday in Cooch Behar for reportedly murdering a youth.

Police sources that said on Wednesday, Subhendu Debnath, a resident of Ramkrishnapally in Baburhat on the outskirts of Cooch Behar town, filed a complaint at Kotwali police station.

Subhendu said that on Tuesday around 9am, Sampad Sarkar, a neighbour, came to his house and left with Arindam, 20, Subhendu’s son, in an e-rickshaw. Since then, Arindam did not return home.

“The father alleged in his complaint that Sampad abducted his son to kill him. Police initiated a search. On Thursday morning, Arindam’s body was recovered from a bush in Tapsikhata area of the neighbouring Alipurduar district,” said a police officer.

Police sources said Sampad was a drug addict.

After recovering the body, police arrested Sampad. He was produced at a local court in Cooch Behar on Thursday and was sent to police custody for seven days.

“We need to grill him to gather more information and to fine the motive behind the murder,” the officer added.

Found dead

A civic volunteer, Manzir Aurangzeb, 34, was found dead at Chanchal in Malda district on Thursday, His family members alleged that he has been murdered and hanged from a bamboo pole close to some bushes.

Around 9pm on Wednesday, he was last seen alive when he left Chanchal police station after duty but didn’t return home. Police have registered a case of an unnatural death.
