Cop shoots from the lip

"Our biggest challenge is our minuscule number," said deputy commissioner (women police) Debasree Chatterjee (right) while speaking about challenges faced by women cops. She was a panellist at the discussion on the sidelines of the promotion of Prakash Jha's Jai Gangajaal at iLead College of Media and Management Studies on Thursday. The film traces the challenges faced by officer Abha Mathur, played by Priyanka Chopra. "Female cops comprise around 3 per cent of the Bengal police force. The number is not sufficient to voice our issues," she said. Chatterjee said she had faced discrimination in her career, but never let that affect her. "I get the courage to carry on from my heart. A cop's job is not just maintaining law and order. There are other social and multifarious activities... sometimes the role is rather confusing. We also need to keep ourselves updated with the law, sociological aspects and demographic pattern, which we don't do."
