Raiganj, July 2: A group of Chhatra Parishad supporters confined Raiganj University vice-chancellor Anil Bhuimali in his office for around four hours today to protest a slash in the number of under-graduate seats.

The Congress's student wing said the supporters had demonstrated as the VC didn't allow them to meet and discuss the reduction in the seats. "As we launched a peaceful demonstration in his office, the VC called up outsiders to remove us," said Nabyendu Guha, the North Dinajpur Chhatra Parishad president.

Around 8pm, a group of Trinamul Chhatra Parishad supporters assembled outside the entrance to the varsity. Raiganj police also reached the spot.

As the Chhatra Parishad supporters continued the demonstration, the police entered Bhuimali's chamber and escorted him out at 8.30pm.

Soon, the Chhatra Parishad and Trinamul Chhatra Parishad supporters came face to face and a minor scuffle ensued. The police intervened and asked the students to leave the varsity. Situation returned to normal at varsity around 9pm.

Sources said even though the state had upgraded Raiganj University College into a university, no additional infrastructure was created to start postgraduate courses. "So, to accommodate UG and PG students, particularly in laboratories, some seats in UG honours courses have been slashed. This led to the protest by the Chhatra Parishad," said a varsity source.
