The children of CG Block got a park of their own on Republic Day and will soon have an animal corner too.
The park was created out of the block’s Green Verge and now has a number of swings, slides and seesaws but its star attraction is a large cage situated in one corner. “This cage will house rabbits, guinea pigs and a variety of birds for children to come and watch,” said Anita Mondal the councillor of Ward 4.

The Green Verge in AE Block also has an animal corner that is popular with kids. In CG Block, the animals will be brought in after winter retreats, so it is easier for them to adapt to the change in environment.

The park has been built out of the wage generation fund and Rs 4 lakh has been spent on the playground equipment and beautification. A perimeter fence marks out the park from the rest of the Green Verge.

“This block was devoid of a park where children could play and there was a long-standing demand from the residents to build a park for them,” said Mondal, adding that a senior citizen’s corner is coming up in the block too.

“A lot of elderly people reside in this block and they have repeatedly requested me for a place for them to sit and chat. So I have decided to build a senior citizens’ corner for them,” said Mondal, adding that Rs 13 lakh would be needed to build such a corner. The location for the corner is yet to be decided.
