Siliguri, March 17: Students and teachers are peeved at the sloppy translation of Madhyamik question papers into Nepali.

In a repeat of what happened last year, in 2003 too, the questions in Nepali not only left the students confused, but teachers, academicians and other intellectuals have been “shocked” by the “utter negligence” in translation of the questions.

In 2002, when a similar problem came up, teachers, linguists, experts in technical fields and academicians had got together to bring out a dictionary of technical terms in Nepali.

Regarding the translation of the physical sciences question paper, head of the Nepali department of North Bengal University Ghanashyam Nepal said: “This is not the Nepali language we know. If this any a language at all, I don’t know its name.”

One of the questions runs thus: “80 calorie taapmaan 0 degree celsius ma one gram baraf pradatt bhayey, tyesko antim taapmaan kati hunchha?

“Taapmaan means temperature, which cannot be expressed in calories. Neither can there be 80 calorie of heat at zero degrees celsius. The sentence makes no sense at all. Even the use of ‘pradatt’ is incorrect here,” said a physical sciences teacher.
