Burglars stole cash and jewellery worth around Rs 2 lakh from Monsoon Wedding actress Tillotama Shome’s family home at Salt Lake on Tuesday when her parents were sleeping inside.

Her father, 64-year-old Anupam Kumar Shome, noticed the two open almirahs in the bedroom of his 2,500sq ft ground-floor flat at BE 38 after he woke up around 5.30am.

“I asked my wife Baisakhi if she had forgotten to close the wardrobes. When she shook her head, I looked at the almirahs and found some gold and silver jewellery and cash missing. I also found the almirahs and drawers in the other two bedrooms ransacked,” said the retired squadron leader of the air force.

“This flat was burgled six years ago. My sister used to stay here then. Nothing had happened in the past four years since we moved in. We even went abroad for more than three months and returned three weeks ago,” Shome said.

The burglars left behind a strip of steel that was probably used to prise open the locks. “The burglars must have scaled the wall and jumped into the little passage between the flat and the boundary wall of the adjacent house. The men opened the flat’s grille lock with the steel strip and broke the lock on the wooden door,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar North police station.

Shome had spent over 20 years in Delhi before shifting to Salt Lake four years ago following his retirement.

Tillotama, who played Alice in Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding and Boro Rani in Q’s Tasher Desh, stays in Mumbai while her brother Gaurav works with Barclays in London.

She told Metro from Mumbai: “I’m horrified. Thankfully, they left my parents alone.... The gap between the haves and the havenots in Calcutta is widening.... You are no longer safe behind locked doors.”
