Tea traders protest

Siliguri, March 24: Over 60 tea traders under the banner of Siliguri Tea Traders? Association today demonstrated in front of the office of additional commissioner of commercial taxes M.C. Mukherjee, to protest against the arrest of Santosh Goel on Tuesday.

The tea trader, who had been charged with involvement in the multi-crore sales tax evasion scam, was produced before the court yesterday where his bail plea was rejected. ?We want a stop to such harassment,? Rajeev Lochan, the secretary of the association, said.


Cong demand

Siliguri: Congress Town president Nantu Pal said the party will write to the Election Commission to protest against the ?unethical practices? of the authorities in issuing photo-identity cards (PICs). He has also demanded that those who have missed their chances the first time should be given another date so that they can get their PICs.


Injured

Siliguri: Three persons, including a child, were injured on Thursday when the rickshaw they were travelling in was hit by a police van.


Oil mill looted

Siliguri: Twelve armed men looted Rs 42,000, a mobile phone and a camera from an oil factory at Paschim Dhantol Chunabhatti at Fulbari in New Jalpaiguri outpost area on Wednesday night.


Tax evasion

Siliguri: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation on Thursday seized computers, almirahs and office stationery from a private housing complex for evading property tax of over Rs 3.5 lakh.


Spring fest

Siliguri: Bagdogra Youngmen?s Sporting Association will organise Basanta Utsav on the club premises on Friday. Sardarshahr Parishad (Uttarbanga) will organise a Rajasthani cultural programme at Dinabandhu Mancha on Sunday to celebrate Holi.


Health camp

Siliguri: Thirty-five physically-challenged students were treated at a free health camp held by Medi Check Welfare Society at Dabgram on Thursday.
