Gangtok, Oct. 14: Sikkim Manipal University will have a new vice-chancellor (VC) by the end of this month with the incumbent VC, L.C. Amarnathan, having already resigned from office. A former director-general of Sikkim police, Amarnathan took charge some three years ago and resigned last month without completing his tenure.
While the Manipal authorities have not yet announced the name of Amarnathan?s successor, it is expected that the next VC is likely to be an academician.
Malda: Amal Mondal (30) of Aiho village in the Habibpur police station area here died after he was electrocuted on Thursday night. Mondal, a member of the local puja committee, was dismantling the lights at the pandal when he accidentally touched a high-tension wire. Two others Pashupati Mondal and Nagfar Mondal were injured while trying to rescue him.
Siliguri: Bhaktinagar police on Friday recovered the body of Raju Das (20) ? a resident of Rabindranagar who had been missing since Wednesday ? from a pond at Durganagar near Iskcon Temple. Das worked at the Siliguri Municipal Corporation. The body has been sent for post-mortem to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.
Siliguri: The New Jalpaiguri police outpost of Bhaktinagar police station on Friday arrested Subhash Roy and Sanjeev Nag for creating nuisance at the puja organised by the Central Colony Railway Institute Club near NJP on Thursday night. Roy and Nag, along with another accomplice, had allegedly beaten up club members and threatened to burn down the pandal.
