Siliguri: Acting on a tip-off, the preventive unit of the customs department went to the Bagdogra railway station to raid a train yesterday. As the customs officers were about to raid the Siliguri-bound DL 5516 Up train, where some foreign goods were reported to be hidden, the smugglers started pelting stones at them. Foreign goods worth Rs 2 lakh were finally seized in the raid.
Siliguri: Members of the Hardware Merchants? Association voiced their concern over the new traffic system in town. In a memorandum to additional superintendent of police Tripurari, they said the prohibition on turning right on to Sevoke Road from Hill Cart Road was causing great inconvenience to residents.
Alipurduar: One Jiban Roy (40) died this afternoon when an electric post fell on him at Falakata in the Alipurduar subdivision. Contractors of West Bengal Electric Supply were replacing the electric post when it fell on him.
