70-year-old raped and killed

Jalpaiguri, April 5: Kamala Lakra (70), a resident of Banarhat tea garden was raped and murdered yesterday while she was on the way back from her daughter’s house. According to police sources, she was going back home from Hindpur tea garden accompanied by her son’s friend when she hurt her leg while stepping on a stone.

The boy went to get a stretcher but could not find her at the spot when he returned. Her body was later discovered lying in a bush nearby. Police officials who reached the spot said she had been raped and killed. Kamala’s daughter’s brother-in-law Dasrarth Oran confessed to commiting the crime with two of his friends. He has been arrested but his accomplices are absconding.


Rape charge

Balurghat: A temporary group D staff has been arrested on charges of raping a psychiatric patient at Balurghat District Hospital in the wee hours on Monday. According to hospital superintendent Ashok Biswas, the accused group D staff, Manik Sarkar, who was working as general duty assistant in the hospital, tried to rape the inmate in the early hours but was caught when the victim started screaming. He has been taken into custody by police.


Fake stamp

Balurghat: Criminal investigation department officials have raided various places in Assam following the leads provided by Asraf Ansari, who was arrested in Chopra while travelling on a Patna-Siliguri bus with fake stamp papers worth Rs 3.9 lakh on March 29.

“We are confident of nabbing the whole gang dealing in fake stamp papers on the basis of what he have gathered from Assam,” said a senior official.


Bard tribute

Siliguri: All India Radio, Siliguri, will pay tribute to English bard William Shakespeare on his birth anniversary in April. On the occasion, AIR will broadcast the dramatised version of five of his famous creations on every Sunday of the month.


Suicide

Islampur: Obsession with the idiot box took its toll on another young boy at Chopra on Monday. Fourteen-year-old Biswajit Sarkar of Daspara under Chopra police station poisoned himself this morning after a heated exchange of words with his parents over watching TV. Sarkar was found lying unconscious and rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.
