A Class XII student of Patha Bhavana at Visva-Bharati was found hanging from the ceiling of a room at a varsity hostel early on Thursday morning.

The father of the boy has lodged a complaint of murder against unknown persons with Santiniketan police. The boy’s family members, along with a group of students and teachers, blocked the main gate of vice-chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty’s residence demanding a probe into the death.

Sources said Asim Das, 17, a resident of Birbhum’s Nanoor, was found hanging from the ceiling of a room at a varsity hostel. The police said they would be able to confirm the reason of the death once they received the post-mortem report. The police said the body had been taken to the varsity’s own Pearson Memorial Hospital before they were informed.

The Visva-Bharati acting public relations officer, Mahua Banerjee, said: “The police inquiry is on and the post-mortem report has not yet been released. So, we cannot comment on this tragic incident at the moment.”
