US consul-general Craig Hall interacts with a student of the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy (IICP) on the occasion of the organisation's 41st anniversary celebrations on the institute's Taratala campus on Wednesday. The students have put up an art and craft exhibition for guests and schoolchildren as part of the two-day celebrations. Also up for grabs are merchandise made by IICP students. Besides admiring their artwork, models and PowerPoint presentations, Hall watched a short film, Rasta, by Deepak Ghosh of IICP's advocacy group Ankur and engaged in block-printing with the students. "I am loving this kind of interaction," said Hall while touring the campus. The visit ended with a short cultural presentation staged by the kids and the screening of a short film on the institution by filmmaker Jayabrato Chatterjee. An overwhelmed Hall said he felt inspired after meeting so many "remarkable students". He also shared his personal journey. "I am a parent who has gone through similar experience. I have a son with learning disability. It took my wife and me years to realise and reconcile to the fact that mainstream education was not suiting him. Then we took him to a special school in the US run by a mother, just like how IICP got started. So I know the hopes and disappointments that parents with special children go through," he said, adding that he has realised he does not have a problem at hand but a "different kind of gift". "Though we come from different parts of the world with diverse cultures, our commitment to children remains the same." He also released IICP's newsletter Deepshikha.
