An advocate of the high court filed an FIR on Tuesday accusing the Barrackpore police commissioner of illegally using a beacon with a flasher on his car and reported the matter to the division bench hearing a case on the misuse of beacons.

Three weeks ago, the bench headed by Justice Asim Kumar Roy had requested people to lodge complaints against misuse of beacons.

Anindya Sundar Das, the advocate, said in the complaint lodged with Hare Street police station that commissioner Sanjay Singh had come to the high court on Monday in a car with a beacon and a flasher.

The lawyer pointed out in the complaint that the police commissioners of Barrackpore and four other commissionerates were not on the list of those entitled to use beacons and beacons with flashers. The list was last revised in March, after the formation of the Barrackpore, Bidhannagar, Howrah and Asansol commissionerates.

“Since the designation the police commissioner of Barrackpore is not on the list, how can he use a beacon with a flasher? If the police break the law, how will they prevent other people from breaking the law?” Das asked.

“The Calcutta police commissioner is entitled to use a beacon but without a flasher. If the city police commissioner is not entitled to use a flasher, how can the Barrackpore commissioner use it?” added Das.

Barrackpore commissioner Singh was not available for comment till late on Tuesday.

Before the high court’s Puja vacation, Justice Roy had directed the state transport authorities to publish a list of dignitaries entitled to use beacons and beacons with flashers in newspapers. After the court reopened, the principal secretary of state transport department filed a report stating that he had carried out the order.

On the basis of the report, Justice Roy had requested people to lodge complaints against those misusing beacons.
