Arpita suffers head injury in accident

Arpita Ghosh, the Trinamul MP from Balurghat in South Dinajpur, suffered head injuries when her car fell into a roadside ditch after being hit by a motor van on NH512 in the district today.

Balurghat, April 13: Arpita Ghosh, the Trinamul MP from Balurghat in South Dinajpur, suffered head injuries when her car fell into a roadside ditch after being hit by a motor van on NH512 in the district today.

Ghosh, a theatre personality, was returning from a campaign meeting in the constituency when the accident happened on the highway.

She was taken to Balurghat district hospital, where a medical board was formed to treat her. Late this evening, she was brought to Calcutta in an ambulance.

Sources said Ghosh's car and the motor van fell on either side of the road after they collided. The inspector in charge of Balurghat police station, Sanjay Ghosh, said the driver of the van died on the spot.

Ghosh had been taken to the emergency department of the district hospital.

According to hospital officials, Ghosh had suffered fractures in the left leg and left hand. "As she has suffered head injuries as well, a brain scan was done," a hospital official said.

The Trinamul candidate for the Balurghat Assembly seat, Shankar Chakraborty; the South Dinajpur chief medical officer of health, Sukumar Dey; and the deputy superintendent of police of Balurghat (Sadar), Saumajit Barua, rushed to the district hospital to see the injured MP.

Chakraborty said: "The doctors have started treatment."

Barua said: "The MP has suffered several injuries. Her car fell into the ditch. The van fell on the other side of the road."
