Salt Lake has a resident King Kong who has settled on Broadway.
Cars screech to a halt and children crane their necks out of their school buses while passing GD Island. A closer look reveals it to be a life-like statue of a gorilla placed on a pavement near the island.
According to a man who owns a cycle repair shop nearby, the statue was placed on the pavement about four months back.
“Some men just came and placed the statue here,” said the man.
Some FE Block residents said that they got a jolt when they first saw a gorilla sitting in the corner of their park when they were out on morning walk.
“I nearly jumped out of my jogging shoes when I thought I saw a gorilla sitting on the pavement. But another morning-walker told me that it was just a statue,” said Neha Agarwal a resident of FE Block.
According to corporation officials, the statue is meant for the adjacent park which will soon be renovated. But when asked why it is being left for weeks on a pavement they said that it was to prevent damage to the statue as weeds in the park could damage its coat of paint.
“This is a four feet statue made of fibre glass with a coat of oil paint over it. The contractor must have wanted to prevent damage to it and so has placed it here,” said the civic official.
