Tamluk, Nov. 17: The CID has seized an ambulance and arrested its driver in connection with the disappearance of six persons in Nandigram on the day the village was recaptured by the CPM four years ago.
The driver had allegedly used the vehicle to transport six corpses to the banks of the Rasulpur river from a hospital in neighbouring Khejuri. The CID has, however, not confirmed the bodies were those of the disappeared persons.
The ambulance belonged to an NGO run by CPM worker Himangshu Das. He is absconding, an officer said.
Interestingly, Himangshu had returned the vehicle to the health department on November 4, a day after the CID made its first arrest, the officer said.
The agency had been looking for the ambulance and its driver following the interrogation of former CPM panchayat member Ajit Bar on November 3, the officer said.
Two doctors of the Khejuri hospital also gave their statements of confession to the magistrate in Haldia court yesterday.
A division bench of Calcutta High Court will hold a detailed hearing on the report tomorrow.
