Sources said Mukti Saha, in his late forties in Maynaguri, suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday night. His family members arranged an ambulance that headed for Siliguri for his treatment.

On the way, the ambulance rammed into a truck, killing Mutki’s wife Rita, 42, on the spot. Two other occupants, ambulance driver Prasanta Roy, 50, and neighbour Bapan Ghosh, 35, also died instantly.

Mukti survived the crash, along with his son and another neighbour. However, they suffered serious injuries and were admitted to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.

Police officers said they suspected the ambulance driver couldn’t see the truck in the dense fog cover.

Later in the day, a Siliguri-bound bus from Panitanki collided with an oil tanker and turned on one side on NH10 near Matigara. Bus passengers suffered minor injuries. Traffic halted till police engaged recovery vans to clear the road.

In Kharibari of Siliguri subdivision, the driver of a private bus lost control and the vehicle tilted on the road. Six passengers and the driver were injured.
