Mohammad Farhan, the driver of the autorickshaw that allegedly rammed into six-year-old Altamash Shafique on Keshub Chandra Sen Street causing multiple fractures and head injuries, was arrested late on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old driver got bail after being produced in court on Wednesday. Altamash, a Class II student, is yet to be operated upon and has been kept “under observation” in SSKM Hospital.

Farhan has been booked under sections for rash and negligent driving, causing grievous hurt and mischief, all of which are bailable.

An officer of the traffic department investigating the case said: “The accused driver had pressed the brakes to avoid hitting the boy. In fact, the vehicle had turned turtle as a result of sudden braking. But since he was driving in a rash and negligent manner, he has been booked under sections of rash driving and causing grievous hurt.”

According to police, Farhan, who lives close to Altamash’s house, has his driving documents in place and did not have any record of traffic violation before Tuesday morning’s accident.

The auto driver had fled after hitting Altamash, who was crossing the road with his grandmother. “I wish police had booked Farhan under non-bailable sections. Mere arresting and granting bail is not enough,” said Altamash’s grandfather Md Rahmat.

“Once Altamash’s condition stabilises, we will plan an operation,” said SSKM superintendent Tamal Kanti Ghosh.
