Central government officials have started doing the rounds to collect information for the Aadhaar card. Enumerators are going door to door and handing out forms that residents have to fill up and bring along to their community hall on a stipulated date (see box).

Aadhaar is a 12-digit identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India to individuals who wish to procure one. The forms require identification details and residents have to carry their Pan cards and voter identity cards with them when they go to submit the data.

The forms mention the date and venue where residents have to show up, and also an enumerator booth (EB) number. The Aadhaar camps are operating from 11am to 4pm.

Residents are also required to submit biometric information at the camp — photograph, fingerprints and iris. “Fingerprints and irises are unique to everyone and so they are foolproof means of identity. They will help eliminate fraud,” said a government official deployed at an Aadhaar card camp in CK-CL Block. Though it is a central government project, Bidhannagar Municipality has been roped in to provide logistic support.

The camps will continue till July but if someone does not receive a form he should visit any camp and ask for help. For those who have received forms but are unable to attend the camp there will be another camp later. Within a month and a half of the submission of the data, the Aadhaar cards will be sent to residents by post.
