Calcutta: Revellers on New Year's Eve rode app cabs like never before.

Both Uber and Ola saw a peak in traffic on December 31 with a surge in the evening and late night.

The city ranked fifth in the country in terms of the maximum number of rides taken on Uber on New Year's Eve with Delhi and the rest of the national capital region topping the list.

The most popular drop-off location for Uber and Ola was Park Street and neighbouring areas. An Ola spokesperson said Salt Lake was the next popular destination.

When the clock struck 12, more than 2,000 riders were on Uber in Calcutta.

Party hoppers in Chennai and Mumbai topped the list of the highest number of rides a single rider took in a day. While Chennai and Mumbai riders took 13 rides each through the night, a party hopper in Pune took 10 rides and one in Calcutta seven.

If it was a night out for riders, so it was for drivers. A driver partner in Delhi completed 18 trips while one in in Calcutta made nine trips.

"Our goal was to ensure riders getting a reliable ride at the tap of a button instead of getting behind the wheel," Sanjay Gupta, marketing head, Uber India and SA, said.

Ola ran a countrywide campaign against drink driving and tied up with various bars and pubs across cities with special discounts and coupons.

"We are happy to say our activities made a positive difference," the Ola spokesperson said.
