With Donald Trump 2.0, hardline takeover of USA begins: what this means for India and the world

Will Trump and his right-minions be able to push through sweeping changes?

Donald Trump’s second term will be nothing like his first.

While Trump was a new boy in Washington in his first term, now he has learned to navigate the city’s tough corridors and get what he wants.

Trump 1.0 attracted a more moderate cadre of Washington insiders, military leaders and top executives. This time, expect foot soldiers of the far-right to take charge.

Will Trump and his right-minions be able to push through sweeping changes like — mass deportation, curbing LGBTQ+ rights, making contraception and abortion as tough as possible to access?

Only time will tell...

In case of India, there is a possibility of Trump slapping us with tariffs as a counter to our own import duties. And there is the case of Pannun case, where an Indian citizen was charged with plotting to kill pro-Khalistani leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York. Friendly countries aren’t supposed to carry out murders in the US.

On a broader global stage, given Trump’s admiration for Russia’s Putin, it is conceivable that US could withdraw support of Ukraine.

In the Middle East, a new Trump admin might again walk away from diplomatic initiatives and ratchet up tensions, particularly with Iran.

Trump’s approach towards Israel and Gaza could also shift US policy in unpredictable ways. On broader scale, a second term could redefine America’s relationships with the NATO allies.

This could set the stage for a new global order marked by risking nationalism, weakened international cooperation and increased superpower rivalry. We should brace ourselves for an era of potentially unprecedented geopolitical changes and conflicts…
