In 2023, filmmaker Kaushik Ganguly had told t2 that he had revealed only half the story he had in mind in his film Ardhangini. Two years later, he is all set to start the shoot of Ajo Ardhangini, starring Jaya Ahsan, Churni Ganguly and Koushik Sen. The film tells the story of fate, identity, and tangled relationships. Shubhra (Suman’s ex-wife), Meghna (his current wife), and Suman find their lives collide once again in a social drama where past and present refuse to stay apart.

Taking to Instagram, he posted an intriguing picture captioned, ‘Duto ghorir toh eki shomoy dekhanor kotha chilo…tobu…kyamon alada alada shob!’ (Two watches were supposed to show the same time… still…somehow everything is different). The audience was quick to catch the reference, especially with the mention of the song Alada alada in the caption, which was sung by Iman Chakraborty in Ardhangini.

Talking to t2 about the announcement, Kaushik Ganguly said: “The major reason for us to come up with the idea for this film was the audience’s interest. After the success of Ardhangini, the audience kept on insisting that we make a sequel.” Ardhangini, which released in June, 2023, was a sensitively told tale that captured the life of a married couple, their life after separation, and a crisis that followed, which brought three people to a point where they had no choice but to face one another. The story revolved around the awkward emotional duel between two wives — past and present — in a time of personal crisis.

Ardhangini had huge potential. And there is a bigger truth that’s hidden, waiting to be unravelled. The sequel will start from where Ardhangini ended, exactly a year and a half later,” said Ganguly. However, a sequel was never the intention while narrating the story initially. “There’s a round-up of the story that I had in mind and I had concluded the film at a certain point. It happened during Bishorjon too. We didn’t know whether there would be a sequel because it all depends on the success of the first film. If people had not seen Ardhangini in such large numbers, there would not have been a sequel even if a part of the story remained untold. Since it was a blockbuster, we felt that the rest of the story would shape up nicely for a sequel. We waited for two years. Now, it feels like the right time to do the film,” said Ganguly.

He tells us that there will be a surprise for the audience. “The characters will remain the same but we will introduce a new character. Indrasish Roy will play the role and it will be a very important character in this sequel. Other than that, everything remains — Anupam Roy will compose the music and Amit Chatterjee will create the background score for the film. Gopi Bhagat is the DoP,” said Ganguly.
